10 Top Concentration Killers, Part 2
Dear Reader,
You surely found some surprises in Part 1 of our series on concentration killers. We all know how tough it is to concentrate sometimes. You don't need to be an adult with an ADHD diagnoses to recognize how challenging it can be to stay focused and "on task". Our modern world is loaded with distractions that can hamper even the best intentions. So let's continue with the final five culprits (and smart ways to keep a handle on them)... still some surprises here.
1. Multitasking - if you can master this skill you likely feel like your getting more done in less time. Not so fast. Research suggests you lose time whenever you shift your focus from one task to another. You end up doing multiple things at once which usually takes longer than just doing them one right after the other.
Your best option is, whenever you can, turn your full attention to one project at a time, especially if you're working on an intense or very high priority task, Use multitasking skills for more routine chores that aren't all that urgent, where your hands are occupied but your mind doesn't have to be.
2. Nagging Thoughts - it's super hard to focus on a task if you're worrying about something else, or thinking about a conversation you had. Nagging thoughts are a very powerful, but often overlooked, distraction that keeps us all from focusing as we'd like.
One way to keep these distracting thoughts from taking away your focus is to write them down. It's surprising how helpful this simple trick can be. Make a "to do" list of errands, vent frustration in your journal. Once thoughts like this are out of your head, and on paper, they don't have the same power to distract you.
3. Depression - according to the National Institute of Mental Health, difficulty concentrating is one of the most well recognized symptoms of depression. If you're having trouble staying focused, and you also feel empty, hopeless or just indifferent, you may be dealing with the onset for this very treatable condition.
If you think this sounds like you, talk with a doctor or counselor as soon as you can, because depression is very treatable, and not only with medications. Many studies have found that medications and talk therapy can be most effective treatments for this disease. Some people benefit from therapy alone. But you won't get better without taking steps to address the real issue.

4. Boredom - it's true that boring tasks burn through your attention span in
no time, making you very vulnerable to distraction. Lots of other things can
seem pretty tempting when you're bored... any child in school can attest to that.
A boring task is easier to get through if you have something pleasant to look
forward to at the end.
What you can do is make a deal with yourself - stay on task for a set time period, earn a 10-minute break. Reward yourself with something pleasant, a drink, a healthy snack or a bit of fresh air.
5. Hunger - because the brain can't focus without fuel, if you've skipped a meal (like breakfast) it's going to be harder for you to focus. Both short-term memory and attention are affected when you get up and out without that first, all-important, meal of the day.
Here's what to do, always eat breakfast, go for high protein snacks, skip the simple carbs and choose complex carbs instead.
